How long Should Wisdom Teeth Removal Take?
Patients that come into my practice tend to ask this particular question a lot. They expect that the removal of 4 wisdom teeth is a procedure that takes a few hours. They have heard their friends and family talk about the experiences where a patient was in the chair for a minimum of 2 hours getting their wisdom teeth out.
Well, let me tell you, it should take 30 minutes at most to get the 4 wisdom teeth removed. Even if patient is awake, and getting the procedure done with local anesthesia (just the numbing medicine), it should not take longer than 30 minutes. When I tell my patients that, they are always very pleasantly surprised.
The reason for why so many people are having to sweat through the 2+hour ordeal is because they are not getting the procedure done at an Oral Surgery Office. General Dentists can take out wisdom teeth, sure, but since it’s not a procedure that they do very often, they are not able to do the procedure efficiently, quickly, and in a way that is comfortable for the patient. Oral Surgeons on the other hand, do this every day and can provide a patient with a quick, efficient, and pleasant experience.
So, if you need to have your wisdom teeth removed, you should really consider doing the procedure at a specialty Oral Surgery Office. It will be an overall better experience for you.
